There is nothing more comforting than sitting in a room that is well-designed, whether it’s delightfully understated or wonderfully dramatic. If done proprely, a well-designed room can even rouse certain feelings of calm. One of our favorite dramatic design styles that achieves this feeling is Masculine Design. It involves using subtle overtures of masculinity to enhance the feeling in a space. This is usually done by utilizing darker tones like blacks and grays. However, it’s often looked over because lets face it, using dark colors in a space can be intimidating! But, it doesn’t have to be.
The secret here is dark features. Whether it be your wall color, your furniture, your choice of decor, or even your comforter set – utilizing darker tones can provide a bold and dramatic look. But on the other hand – dark tones are not something that should be over used in a space! If you’re not careful, it can become dreary. It’s also important to be mindful of the room choice, as well as accent colors and sources of light. Maybe this bold style would best suit your basement? Or maybe your living room. You can even bring it into your kitchen (check out our project Kitchen Rehab in Collingswood). However, be wary of using black in bedrooms – instead, opt for dark grays with black accents for contrast.
In my opinion, just the right amount of dark accents can drill character into the foundation of any existing design. If you’re interested in reading more, check out this article from Decoist.
